Saravana Bhavan -- Dosa Heaven

Restaurant Name: Saravana Bhavan
Restaurant Location: 81 Lexington Avenue, New York

Finding good, authentic Indian food in restaurants in the US can be a challenge--especially if your mother-in-law is an amazing Indian cook. So, every time we try a new place, our hearts are braced for what seems to be the inevitable disappointment.

Thus, imagine our delight to discover Saravana Bhavan. This South Indian eatery is the real deal -- great, authentic, hot, and fast. Their specialty is dosas (thin crepes typically stuffed with mixture of potatoes and spices and served with sambar and chutneys) and they have a really extensive menu of them, ranging from traditional masala dosas to much more exotic varieties.

One that that we tried was an unusual dried fruit and nut dosa, seen here:

It was delicate and the sweetness of the fruit set off the salty element of the nuts. It was a singular taste experience.

The classic Masala dosa was also spot on (pictured here):

If you are looking for a casual, authentic south Indian culinary experience, Saravana Bhavan is the perfect spot.

They don't take reservations, but if you arrive before 7/7:30pm you should have very little wait.

For three courses (we shared appetizers and a dessert), the total was $24 per person (tip included).

WORST SERVICE - WORST FOOD - TOO EXPENSIVE - VERY LESS QUANTITY AND ABOVE ALL WORST PEOPLE I AM SORRY I HAVE TO GIVE ONE STAR. IF I WOULD I WOULD GIVE 0 STAR WORST SERVICE - WORST FOOD - TOO EXPENSIVE - VERY LESS QUANTITY AND ABOVE ALL WORST PEOPLE WORST.. worst worst worst of life. woww...... let me introduce the worst of all time - Saravana... dining experience at its worst... I have been to almost every single restaurant in New York. But this was the WORSTS. My sister came from Boston and I took her there with my wife and daughter. The waiter was trying to feel us down by saying that you are the only one who is looking for price and quantity. I don't know it was nepali guy or chienese, but he was the worst of all time. I never seen any server like this idiot. He bring the food in about 30 minutes. It was my first time otherwise i usually go to the next street - Chennai Garden. These saravana guys never stand in front of the quality, Quantity and the Service of Chennai Garden. Next Worst -: When they give me the bill, the gratitude was already there. I asked what is this - again the same idiot said - its service charge. I asked him if i dont want to - then he made his face little odd and said "you have no option but to pay". wow, that was great... it was like this reastaurant has the bouncers there... Think twice or so many times to go there. Take my words - dont ever go there. especially when you taking your guest first time...
